Youth in Age: Seeking the “Logical Eye” in Canada’s Mid-Century Housing Propaganda

26 August 5:30 pm-7:00 pm: The NBM Presents Turning Tides: Young Adult speaker series in the shipbuilding gallery featuring Ben Peterson

Abstract for the talk: In the early 1950s, Saint John took center stage in Macleans magazine. Laid out with the photographs of none other than Yousuf Karsh, the magazine’s message was simple: the situation was dire. Housing problems meant social problems and in Saint John they ran rampant. Ours were destined to become an example for other Canadian cities in pursuit of mobility, federal monies, and— most importantly— modernity.

Nearly seventy years later, though our built landscape has changed dramatically, many are left wanting more. Come to enjoy a screening of a thrilling National Film Board film brimming with mid-century ideas on housing and cities. Following a lively discussion on that period of immense change in the city of Saint John. Bring questions, curiosity and memories.
