Sometimes, treasured objects need a helping hand to ensure their survival and continued enjoyment by the public. Over the past three decades, the New Brunswick Museum has collaborated with the Provincial Fine Art Conservation Laboratory to conserve and restore significant works of art. Led by now-retired Fine Art Conservator of New Brunswick, Adam Karpowicz, this project has given new life to several paintings in our collection.
Time, materials, and circumstance can take a toll on a masterpiece. Varnishes yellow, glazes crack, and frames weaken, compromising the artist’s original intent. In some cases, accidents or poor handling can cause irreparable damage. The paintings featured here have all faced such challenges. But thanks to Adam Karpowicz’s expert conservation techniques, these works of art have been coaxed back to life. The before-and-after photographs on display are a testament to his skill and dedication. As you explore these transformed masterpieces, consider the importance of conservation in preserving our cultural heritage for future generations.
