What Is… an Exhibition?

Ever wonder what goes into creating an unforgettable museum experience?

The New Brunswick Museum invites you to explore the often-overlooked world of exhibition-making in “What Is… an Exhibition?” This interactive and evolving project takes you behind the scenes, introducing you to the diverse team of professionals who bring exhibitions to life.

Meet the project coordinator, curator, collections manager, exhibit technician, designer, communications officer, development officer, and interpreters – some of the nine (or sometimes more!) professional groups who work together in perfect harmony to create an exhibition. “It’s a real symphony,” says Dominique Gélinas, Head of Exhibitions & Visitor Experience. “Each performer plays at the right time, and the project manager is the conductor who keeps the tempo!”

Discover the challenges of managing projects that can take up to two years to develop, from conserving delicate artifacts to designing engaging displays. Learn about the five factors that lead to deterioration and how museum professionals strike a balance between preservation and accessibility. With hands-on activities and exclusive insights, this exhibition is a must-see for anyone curious about the art of exhibition-making.
