Sottobosco – The Forest Floor, is a captivating exhibit of coloured pencil drawings by Riverview, NB, artist Barbara Safran de Niverville.
Meaning “undergrowth” in Italian, Sottobosco refers to the often-overlooked layer of life that thrives in the forest’s shadowy understory. Safran de Niverville’s intricate drawings, rendered on black backgrounds, coax details from the darkness, revealing the dance of flora, fauna, and geology that unfolds just above the roots of the trees. Each piece is a testament to the artist’s patience, dedication, and deep appreciation for the unassuming beauty that surrounds us.
This intimate exhibit is part of the Museum’s revived Meet the Artist series, which showcases the work of New Brunswick’s most talented artists. By presenting Safran de Niverville’s work in this special setting, we hope to inspire a new appreciation for the natural world and our place within it. Take a moment to slow down, look closely, and let the quiet beauty of Sottobosso – The Forest Floor – leave its mark on you.
