The Koller Portfolio – An Homage to the Saint John River Landscape – THADDEUS HOLOWNIA

Thaddeus Holownia of Jolicure, NB, is a remarkable visual artist, teacher and publisher who recently retired after more than forty-one years of teaching in the Fine Arts Department at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB.  Over the course of his distinguished career, Holownia has made use of large-format cameras to produce compelling views of the landscape that speak to the complex relationship between nature and humanity. His concern for ecological issues led to a powerful project, Silver Ghost: The Salmon Rivers of Eastern Canada, that focused attention on ecology and the endangered Atlantic Salmon. Not included in that survey of salmon-supporting waterways was the mighty Saint John River, and at the behest of Dr. Oscar L. Koller of Fredericton, NB, Holownia created a new suite revealing the delicate majesty found on the shores and watershed of eastern Canada’s longest river.
