Colour image of brown rock with black vertical stripe with a curved top
Plant: Oricilla bilinearis Gensel. Devonian. Dalhousie Junction, New Brunswick. Collector: P.G. Gensel, c. 2000. New Brunswick Museum (NBMG 12113). Image width 5.5 cm. Ancient fiddlehead? In the Spring fiddleheads are a common sight in New Brunswick. The unrolling of Ostrich Ferns signals time for a gastronomic delight. Although there were no true ferns in the Devonian Period, the coiled stem of this ancient zosterophyll shows the same circinate vernation, or unrolling of the stem at the growing tip.
