New Brunswick Museum Travelling Exhibition Opens at the Bathurst Heritage Museum
The New Brunswick Museum (NBM) is pleased to announce that the Bathurst Heritage Museum will feature the NBM Travelling Exhibition: The Lamp and the Union: Nursing in Twentieth Century New Brunswick, September 26 to November 1, 2010.
The Bathurst Heritage Museum will host an Open House this Sunday, September 26, 2-5pm to celebrate the opening of The Lamp and the Union: Nursing in Twentieth Century New Brunswick. The exhibition is based on research conducted by Gary Hughes, New Brunswick Museum’s Curator of History and Technology, in cooperation with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Nurses Union.
Mr. Hughes will be attending the opening at the Bathurst Heritage Museum and comments that “The Lamp and the Union explores the New Brunswick nurse’s identity crisis between the Florence Nightingale ideal of service on the one hand and union advocacy on the other during the course of the twentieth century.”
This showcase exhibition presents a brief overview of the story of nursing in New Brunswick and features a sampling of artifacts from the NBM’s New Brunswick Nursing History Collection. It highlights the dramatic changes which occurred in the profession from the time when the first nursing schools were established in New Brunswick in the late nineteenth century to the emergence of a more activist and specialized profession.
The research for this exhibition was conducted as part of a multi-year research project to help New Brunswick workers learn from the experiences of other workers over the past century. This project was funded through the Community University Research Alliance Program of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Researchers at the University of New Brunswick and Université de Moncton, provincial labour groups and heritage organizations, including the New Brunswick Museum, carried out research on a variety of topics relating to working life in New Brunswick.
Jane Fullerton, CEO of the New Brunswick Museum, comments that “through the New Brunswick Museum’s Outreach Programme of activities, the NBM is able to engage residents all around the province, to share stories of New Brunswick’s past, and consider its future.”
This exhibition will be on display at the Bathurst Heritage Museum until 1 November 2010. For more information visit www.bathurstheritage.ca or telephone 506-546-9449
