Artists & Authors at Portraits Book Signing Event Thursday, December 10 at the NBM

More than twenty of the artists featured in the Portraits exhibition will accompany New Brunswick authors Peter Larocque and Peter Buckland for a special book signing event Thursday, December 10, 2009 from 5 to 7 pm at the New Brunswick Museum, Market Square.  This is a unique opportunity to join the artists and authors for conversation and book signing in this final public event for the exhibition which concludes on January 3, 2010.

The years from 1970 to 2000 were a period of tremendous growth in the arts in New Brunswick.  Portraits: New Brunswick Painters, a new exhibition and publication produced by the New Brunswick Museum, features thirty painters who lived, worked and exhibited in New Brunswick during these dynamic decades.

For all of these painters, a major portion of their careers occurred in these three decades, and they made a significant contribution to the province’s artistic heritage, as exemplified by the works on display. Painters selected for the exhibition demonstrate the diversity of origin, gender, language, education and vision that characterizes New Brunswick painting. The examples of their work included are drawn from the collection of the New Brunswick Museum, as well as other public and private collections.

A key part of this exhibition is a series of photographic portraits of the artists by James Wilson. For a quarter century, Wilson has been documenting people from all walks of life in an extensive series of portraits. These powerful black and white photographs provide a fascinating look at these painters with the tools of their trade, at work or in their studios.

In the companion book, Portraits: Painters of New Brunswick, Peter Larocque, New Brunswick Museum Curator of New Brunswick Cultural History and Art; and Peter Buckland, owner of the Peter Buckland Gallery, showcase thirty artists to tell the story of contemporary painting in New Brunswick. A biographical sketch, reproductions of selected paintings, and a photographic portrait by James Wilson provide an overview of each artist. Essays by Larocque, Buckland and Wilson accompany the portraits, and provide insight into the larger experience of contemporary art, its practice and its practitioners. The book is published by the New Brunswick Museum and is available at the Museum Shop, or through Goose Lane Editions.

The exhibition and accompanying publication were produced by the New Brunswick Museum in a unique collaboration with private gallery owner Peter Buckland and photographer James Wilson.
