Smile! The Tooth and Nothing but the Tooth

Smiling, eating, brushing, flossing…how much do you really know about your teeth?  Discover more about what’s behind your ‘smile’ with a visit to Smile! The Tooth and Nothing but the Tooth, a national traveling exhibition now at the New Brunswick Museum.  No appointment necessary!

A smile is worth a thousand words.  It is a complex vehicle for emotions which can convey very subtle messages, and it continues to be a basic form of communication. The genetically determined shape of our teeth, their colour and regularity, can also be made to follow fashion. What are these fashion trends that change over time, and vary from one culture to another? How can teeth serve as a research tool to go back in time, to identify species of animals and even to track down criminals? These are just a few of the many avenues to be explored in Smile! the exhibition.

The Smile! exhibition is designed for both adults and children alike. Visitors of all ages will learn what teeth are made of, how they grow, what they are used for, how the teeth of animals vary from one species to another, and what has been the significance of showing our teeth in the development of human society. Throughout this educational exhibition, a variety of interactive games will offer children (of all ages!) the opportunity to have fun while absorbing information. Smile! also aims to raise awareness of dental health and hygiene, which is essential to good health in general.

In conjunction with the Smile! exhibition there will be a special Smiles Family Night on Thursday, November 5 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. This free event is a great opportunity for families to interact and learn all about the tooth, and nothing but the tooth.  There will be refreshments, lots of fun, and prizes to be won…guaranteed to make everyone smile!

The Smile! traveling exhibition is co-produced by the Centre d’exposition de l’Université de Montréal and the Exhibition Production Centre of the Musée de la nature et des sciences in Sherbrooke. It has been made possible through support from the Department of Canadian Heritage (Museum Assistance Program), Nobel Biocare and Sunstar GUM, the Ordre des dentistes du Québec, the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association, and local sponsorship.
