New Brunswick Museum Calls for Proposals from New Brunswick Visual Artists

The New Brunswick Museum today announced a call for proposals from New Brunswick visual artists who are interested in exhibiting their work at the Museum.  New Brunswick Museum Director and CEO Jane Fullerton said that “presenting contemporary New Brunswick art is an important aspect of the Museum’s exhibit program.  Exhibition opportunities have been scheduled in the spring and fall of 2010 and 2011.”

The deadline for artists to submit proposals is January 9, 2009. Details on eligibility and information required in a proposal are available on the New Brunswick Museum web site. A jury process will be used to select artists for exhibition.

The New Brunswick Museum has the only permanent gallery dedicated to presenting an overview of New Brunswick visual art.  The Museum has a long history of exhibiting the work of New Brunswick artists.  From 1949 to 1954, a series of exhibitions titled Know Your Own Artists featured artists including Miller Brittain, Jack Humphrey, Fred Ross and Julia Crawford.  Work of these and many other New Brunswick artists is included in the Museum collection.

In 2007, inspired by the original exhibitions, a new Know Your Own Artists exhibition series was launched.  Contemporary New Brunswick visual artists Luc A. Charette, Dan Steeves, Alexandra Flood and Susan Vida Judah were selected through a jury process for solo exhibitions. Flood’s work is currently on exhibit and Judah’s will be exhibited in 2009.  These exhibitions provide an opportunity for New Brunswickers to view recent work by talented artists who are making a strong impact in the province and beyond.

Peter Larocque, the Museum’s Curator of New Brunswick Cultural History and Art, noted that “For over seventy-five years the New Brunswick Museum has exhibited and collected the work of New Brunswick’s contemporary artists, whose thoughtful and engaging works challenge us to look at ourselves and our surroundings with new eyes.”
